We invite you to join us in the celebration of this milestone and help ensure we can continue our mission for another 150 years and beyond. By contributing to the 150th Anniversary Fund, we can expand our programming for the community to keep pets and people together. This includes supporting subsidized veterinary care, increased spay/neuter vouchers, our Pet Food Pantry, and other essential programs to assist pet families throughout the East Bay.
Together, we can work towards a more compassionate world for people and companion animals.
Journey to More Than a Shelter
April 24, 1874: Oakland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals incorporated. Created by a group concerned about the treatment of working animals such as horses in the community.
1912: Our first educational programs established. 1922: First facility in Oakland opens.
1958: First shelter on Baldwin Street opens. 1961: We opened one of the nation's first vet departments to treat shelter animals.
1963: Bay Area Bulletin recognized us for our public service of reuniting pets & their owners. 1983: Our first Humane Education Director joins East Bay SPCA.
1988: First shelter in Bay Area to require spay/neuter of all adopted animals. 1998: Spay & Neuter Clinic opens, the largest in the U.S. at the time.
2001: Dublin facility opens. 2004: We worked with Craigslist to ban all sale of animals on the site.
2008: Humane Advocacy Program established. 2013: Theodore B. Travers Family Veterinary Clinic opens.
2013: Renovated Oakland shelter opens.
2023: Fourth American Animal Hospital Association reaccreditation of Theodore B. Travers Family Veterinary Clinic, providing quality accessible care for pets in our community.
April 24, 2024: 150th anniversary and we established National Pet Care for All Day. The cities of Oakland & Dublin announce proclamations in honor of our anniversary and National Pet Care for All Day.
