An Incredible Rescue
On Wednesday, July 8, a Good Samaritan found 17 puppies in a Walmart parking lot in Livermore, uncontained and without an owner. Sadly, they witnessed one puppy hit by a car and killed. The finder rescued the surviving 16 puppies and brought them to our Dublin and Oakland campuses for immediate care.
We conducted an immediate emergency intake of the 9-week-old Border Collie mixes with medical and behavioral evaluations. Thankfully, the 16 puppies were found to be in overall good health. Since their intake, we have begun the process of providing spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and microchips prior to making the puppies available for adoption.
In addition to the medical care they are receiving, our Behavior team has been working with some of the puppies to develop important socialization skills.
This unique case came just as we passed the first year of our contract with the Livermore police department, which gives East Bay SPCA the responsibility of providing Livermore’s stray animals with shelter, care, and placement. Within just the last year, 504 stray animals entered our shelter from Livermore. Stray animals like the 16 puppies were provided with medical and behavioral care, shelter, and adoption placement.
“This situation serves as a perfect example of why we exist, and why we need the support of our community to exist,” said Jes Cytron, East Bay SPCA Vice President of Operations. “Without the Good Samaritan’s immediate rescue and transport, and without consistent adoptions and fosters to keep shelter space open, helping these puppies would not have been possible.”
Some of the 16 puppies will be ready for adoption soon. Interested adopters are encouraged to visit eastbayspca.org/adopt to keep up with their adoption status and see all the incredible animals currently looking for homes at East Bay SPCA.
