Howl-O-Ween Pet Safety Tips

Halloween is one of the most exciting nights of the year for people. Costumes, glowing jack-o’-lanterns, a steady stream of trick-or-treaters, and bowls of candy all add up to a fun, festive evening.

For pets, though, the same things can feel overwhelming, and some can be downright dangerous. A doorbell that rings every few minutes, strangers in masks, and unfamiliar treats within reach can turn a happy holiday into a stressful one.

The good news is that a little planning goes a long way. Here are six simple ways to keep your pets safe and comfortable this Howl-O-Ween.

1. Leave pets at home while trick-or-treating

It’s tempting to bring your dog along for the neighborhood costume parade, but Halloween night is a lot to take in. Crowded sidewalks, unfamiliar costumes, and sudden noises can cause even pets who are usually comfortable in public to react in unexpected ways. A quiet night at home is the kindest choice.

2. Create a safe space indoors

Frequent visitors and a ringing doorbell can make even the calmest pet anxious. Set up a comfortable area away from the front door with fresh water, favorite toys, and a cozy place to rest. Bonus: keeping your pet in a separate room also prevents them from slipping out the door while you hand out candy.

3. Make sure identification is up to date

With the doors opening and closing all evening, it’s a good time to double-check that your pet is wearing a collar with current ID tags. Take a minute to confirm that their microchip registration has your up-to-date contact information, too. If your pet does get out, accurate ID gives you the best chance of a quick reunion.

4. Keep Halloween goodies out of reach

Chocolate, candy containing xylitol (a sugar substance found in many sugar-free sweets and gums), and alcoholic beverages can be dangerous or even life-threatening for pets. Store treats securely, toss wrappers in a covered trash can, and remind kids not to share their Halloween haul with the pets in the family.

If you think your pet has eaten something toxic, call your veterinarian or nearest emergency vet right away, or contact one of these 24/7 hotlines.

5. Prioritize comfort over costumes

Some pets don’t mind dressing up, and many would simply rather not. Never force your pet to wear a costume, and take it off if they show signs of discomfort, like freezing in place, pawing at the outfit, or trying to hide. If your pet is comfortable in costume, choose one that lets them move, see, and breathe easily, with no loose pieces they could chew or swallow.

6. Be mindful of decorations

Open flames, electrical cords, and decorative items can all pose hazards to curious pets. Consider battery-operated candles for your jack-o’-lanterns, and keep decorations that could be chewed, swallowed, or knocked over safely out of reach.

Plan Ahead for a Happy Howl-O-Ween

Every pet is different, and you know yours best. By planning ahead and paying attention to your pets’ individual needs, your whole household can enjoy the Halloween festivities while your four-legged family members stay safe and comfortable.
