Community Service Days
A quick and easy way to help our organization while having fun! This half-day volunteer program is for students ages 12 and up who would like to volunteer, but are too young to do so independently.
How Does it Work?
Youth Community Service Days are offered once per month for a 4 hour session at either our Oakland or Dublin Adoption Centers. Participants should enroll based on their age on the day of the session they are registering for. All program hours are eligible to be signed off as service hours (hours will be signed off at the end of the program). Community Service Days are an opportunity for youth to volunteer, without needing their parents/guardians to be present.
The fee for participating in a Youth Community Service Day is $50/student. This fee helps to cover the cost of staff supervision during the program. Limited financial assistance is available for qualified applicants. Click here to request financial aid for our Youth Volunteer Programs. Please contact us if you need an application in another language, or if you prefer to complete a hardcopy rather than online.
What Will We Be Doing?
Particpants will be completing a variety of tasks to assist East Bay SPCA programs and the animals in our care. The tasks for each day are dependent on our organization’s needs at that moment. Some examples of potential tasks include making dog treats, assisting with shelter laundry, creating adoption posters, preparing for upcoming East Bay SPCA programs or events, making cat toys, assisting with shelter clean-up, providing attention for the animals in our care, etc. While completing their volunteer tasks, participants will learn about responsible pet care, the medical needs of animals, dog and cat behavior, training techniques, animal advocacy and more. Please note that this is a volunteer program–while all volunteer tasks will be centered around helping the shelter and the animals in our care, participants should not expect to spend the full session with the shelter animals. In order to make sure our animal-loving participants still get the dog and cat time we know they love, we will plan to include a minimum of one hands-on animal meet-and greet. As an animal shelter is a very dynamic environment, the planned daily tasks are always subject to change based on the needs of our staff, volunteers, and shelter animals.
