Teaching Love and Compassion (TLC)

TLC Program East Bay SPCA

Teaching Love and Compassion (TLC) is a six-week long, intensive after-school program run by the East Bay SPCA in collaboration nearby schools and youth organizations including Light House Community Charter School. It is a violence prevention and intervention program that aims to teach persistence, empathy and respect for all living beings through a combination of dog training and humane education. During the seven-week program, 14 middle-school-age students learn about anger management, public speaking, conflict resolution, the web of life, animal welfare, and positive reinforcement. Teachers select program participants who must apply for and be accepted to the program. Participants must maintain perfect school attendance during the six-week program in order to finish training their dogs.

With the guidance of the program staff, students pair up to train East Bay SPCA shelter dogs. The pairs of students work together to train their dogs basic commands such as sit, watch, down, dance and even fun agility tricks like jumping through hula hoops

The dogs’ new manners and familiarity with commands help them become better candidates for adoption with most dogs in the program quickly adopted after “graduation.”
