Kids & Volunteering

Kids can volunteer too! If you are between 10-18, please read the information below to see what is available for you.

KIDS and the East Bay SPCA!

The East Bay SPCA encourage families and children to volunteer. Spending time helping animals with your children can not only teach them about responsibility and compassion, but you might be surprised what it teaches you.

At the same time, it is our responsibility to ensure that you are in a safe environment, with the information necessary to protect yourself and our animals. We do allow children below the age of 18 to volunteer but require a parent or guardian be involved in both the training and the actual volunteering.

What age can a child volunteer?
  • All children must be 10 or older.
  • A parent or guardian must also attend training as a volunteer, and supervise their children between the ages of 10 and 15 at all times. This includes volunteer sessions, orientations and trainings. Parental or guardian supervision ensures the safety of your children as well as of the shelter animals.
  • In positions that involve handling dogs, the adult must hold the leash at all times.
  • A parent or guardian who has not completed training cannot accompany trained children.
  • Young adults between the ages of 16 and 18 may volunteer on their own (when approved), but must be supervised by a parent or guardian during all orientations and training. This means the parent or guardian must be present at all trainings and orientations.
What positions can children fill?

10-18 years
  • Feline Socializer-- Parent or guardian must handle cats in and out of cages.
  • Puppy Socializer-- Parent or guardian must carry puppies in and out of play rooms.
  • Dog Manners Coach-- Parent or guardian must hold the leash at ALL times.
  • Special Events-- When pre-approved.
16-18 years
  • All positions above that are available to 10-15 year olds, but can be approved to work on their own.
  • Dog Grooming-- Without parent or guardian when pre-approved only.
