The East Bay SPCA is a non-profit organization. We receive no government funding, nor funding from any national or local humane organizations. Therefore, volunteers are vital to our existance. We would not be able to provide the excellent level of care that we do without the dedication, devotion and reliability of the hundreds of volunteers who commit to our organization on a weekly basis.
There are many ways to contribute time to our organization. While we have a very dedicated staff of employees, many tasks critical to ensuring the adoptability of dogs and cats rest on the strong shoulders of our Volunteers.
We have positions that:
- Require regular, weekly 2-hour commitments in our shelters.
- Require monthly commitments at Mobile Adoptions or at other events.
- Require various schedules related to special events or one-time needs.
- Only require short term service: Short term service involves volunteer work which does not involve direct contact with our shelter animals. We can only accept community service volunteers looking to earn hours for minor traffic violations or for school requirements.

How to Volunteer Because volunteers are such an key part of our operations, it is important the every person volunteering for the East Bay SPCA be well trained for the tasks they are asked to do, and educated in the procedures that ensure our staff and volunteers' safety. If you are interested in volunteering for this organization, there are several steps that must be taken prior to receiving a volunteer assignment. Please note that it can take 1-2 months to become an "official" volunteer once you begin the process.
- Sign Up for a Volunteer Orientation. We only accept sign ups 2 weeks prior to the orientations.
- Fill out an application and waiver at orientation.
- Identify the volunteer positions in which you are interested.
- Attend the appropriate animal-specific training classes.
- Schedule a time to follow a Lead Volunteer, which is someone who has experience in the position in which you will be working.
- Schedule a shift with the Volunteer Manager.
After reading about our available opportunities and what they require, plan on attending a Volunteer Orientation and animal-specific training classes.
We look forward to your involvement with our organization. In addition to a little cat or dog hair on your clothes, you will go home with the knowledge that your efforts made a difference in the life of a homeless cat or dog in your community.
