ABOUT US

Q. About 10 days ago, our dog made a concerted attack on the parakeet’s cage, knocking it off the table and the top flew off. He then bit Jojo and broke his leg. We put a homemade splint on it and it seems to be healing, whereas at first he would not move it at all. My question is: how soon is it safe to remove the splint without risking further injury?

A: If the leg is actually broken, a splint is generally left on for anywhere from 2-6 weeks. Usually the veterinarian will take an x-ray halfway through to make sure the bone is healing. If your bird is eating a seed diet, you should also be supplying a calcium supplement (such as Nekton MSA) to aid bone healing.
