Microchipping saves lives!
A microchip is a small device, no bigger than a grain of rice, that is inserted under the skin between the shoulder blades of dogs and cats. This device emits a signal, which when scanned, retrieves a registration number. That number is registered to the pet's owner, or to the shelter or veterinarian who inserted the microchip.
If your pet is ever lost, animal control agencies around the country routinely scan for microchips to assist in identifying its owner. By simply calling the 800 number for that microchip manufacturers database, your pet can be quickly reunited with you.
Microchipping is available at all of our facilities. The microchips that we offer are 24 Hour PetWatch, read by our scanners, and those used by Oakland Animal Services, East County Animal Services and other East Bay public shelters. It uses the standard frequency adopted for U.S. microchips. International microchips have a different frequency. If a pets arrives in our facility with a chip, that chip may be another brand but operates on the same frequency.
- All animals available for adoption are microchipped.
- If you have a pet that is not microchipped, we offer microchipping at our Veterinary Clinic as a drop-in procedure without an appointment or with any regular appointment. It can also be done during spay/neuter surgery.
Our microchip fee is included in our adoption fee. Pets who do not have a microchip can be chipped in our clinic for $30. This includes implantation of the chip, initial registration in the 24 Hour PetWatch database and an ID tag. Future changes of address or ownership are not included, but you are provided a certificate and change-of-address forms.
