ABOUT US

Q.  Do dogs get hot spots on their faces? My dog has a sore on his face. I don’t know how it started, but it’s very slow to heal. (It’s been about 3 weeks now with no significant improvement.) It is about 1 inch x ½ inch and looks like an abrasion. It started out looking like a scratch, but has gotten larger. It doesn’t seem to be hot, swollen, or infected. He has allergies and licks a lot, but has never had a hot spot. My dog is mixed breed, short-haired, 60 lbs and about 5 years old. (I adopted him from the East Bay SPCA about 3 years ago.)

A.  A “hot spot” is a sore which the dog licks until it is red and irritated. I would be more concerned that the sore on your dogs face could be a bacterial or yeast infection, ringworm, or mites. Your veterinarian should be able to examine it, perhaps using a microscope, and determine the best course of treatment.
