Kittens vs. Adult Cats
|
Kittens are hilarious, playful, and little furballs of fun! As with any baby, however, kittens require more time and attention than adult cats. Like human children, they require reassurance, patience, energy and time to ensure they grow up to be well-adjusted adults.
|
Kittens are great, but definitely require more attention than adults! Consider these facts:
- Kittens get into everything! You will need to baby-proof your home. Be sure that poisonous cleaners and plants have been put out of reach.
- Kittens love to play! It is important to teach them early on that biting and scratching is not appropriate behavior.
- Adult cats are very affectionate. Kittens are more concerned with playing than petting. Are you looking for a mellow lap cat with whom to cuddle on the couch, or a little ball of energy?
- Adult cats are still playful. They are not as wild as kittens, but still enjoy chasing a string or a feather. They are just less hyperactive and have outgrown the impulse to chew everything.
- Adult cats take away the guesswork. What will the cat look like? With she be long- or short- haired? Will he be playful or calm? With an adult cat, you already know the answers to these.
- Kittens require lots and lots of patience. They may have litterbox accidents. They may chew on your favorite possessions. They have very sharp claws and teeth and have to be taught how NOT to use them.
- Adults are a better match with children. Kittens are very fragile and can be easily injured with rough handling. And because they are just learning to use their claws and teeth, they can also inadvertently injure a small child.
- Kittens do well in pairs. If you are considering a kitten, consider adopting two. If you can handle the financial impact, two are often easier to care for. They play together, learn proper behaviors together and keep each other company, leaving you less exhausted!
- Adult cats need homes, too. Many wonderful cats are not adopted as readily as kittens are, but they also need good homes and loving owners. You’ll be delighted with the companionship of an adult cat!
Please take the time to consider whether an adult cat or a kitten is the best choice for you!
