Making Sure You're Ready to Adopt a Dog
Adopting an animal is a life-long commitment, and shouldn't be undertaken lightly. To make sure you're ready to bring a dog into your life, answer the following:
- I have spent at least one hour with the dog or puppy I want to adopt.
- I am able to have pets in my current apartment or house.
- I do not plan to make my dog a "backyard dog."
- I am aware my new dog will need a period of time to get accustomed to his new home.
- I have introduced this dog to any dogs I already have in my household.
- I am aware that my dog will need vaccinations each year.
- I have all of the items I'll need to take care of my pet, including a crate, carrier, leash, collar, ID tags, flea medication, food and water bowls, and food.
- I am aware of the financial requirements of owning a dog (average annual cost is approximately $800).
- My entire household has met the animal, and loves him/her as much as I do.
- Nobody in my household is allergic to pets.
- I am aware my dog will need obedience training to ensure that he or she is an obedient dog.
- I am ready to be a responsible pet owner, giving my new pet all the love and attention he or she needs.
If you can say 'yes' to all of these things, then you're ready to bring home your newest best friend.
