Making Sure You're Ready to Adopt a Cat
Adopting an animal is a life-long commitment, and shouldn't be undertaken lightly. To make sure you're ready to bring a cat into your life, answer the following:
- I have spent at least one hour with the cat or kitten I want to adopt.
- I am able to have pets in my current apartment or house.
- My new friend will be an inside cat.
- I am aware of the alternatives to declawing such as trimming nails and soft paws.
- I have considered the impact of a new cat on my existing animals.
- I am aware that my new cat will need an adjustment period to get used to my family and home.
- I am aware that my new cat will need vaccinations each year.
- I have all of the items I'll need to take care of my pet, including a carrier, collar, ID tags, flea medication, food and water bowls, scratching posts, litter box, and food.
- I am aware of the financial requirements of owning a cat(average annual cost is approximately $500).
- I am ready to be a responsible pet owner, giving my new pet all the love and attention he or she needs.
If you can say 'yes' to all of these things, then you're ready to bring home your newest best friend.
