Veterinary Technician I / – FLOATER, Hourly. This position will be utilized at both the full service clinic as well as spay neuter clinics. It includes Vet Tech as well as CSR duties as necessary.
SALARY: $10.91/hour starting
HOURS: This is a full time position with schedule to be determined.
ACCOUNTABILITY: The Vet Tech Floater is accountable to the Veterinary Services Manager on all personnel and administrative issues and to the veterinarian for medical issues.
ROLE: The Vet Tech I / assists the Veterinarian in providing high quality care to our clients, their pets, and all animals in the shelter. Responsibilities include a range in scope from client service support to the application of specified technical skills. The Vet Tech I/ is held to the high standards of the OSPCA, is expected to provide high quality animal care, and carries out his/her duties with moderate to minimal supervision.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Vaccinate the appropriate animals that ‘drop-in’ during normal clinic hours.
2. Perform vet-approved procedures on animals that come in during ‘drop-in’ hours. This would include toenail trims or AG clearing.
3. Set up in house lab tests and record results with vet approval.
4. Close the pharmacy at the end of the day.
5. Maintain a well stock pharmacy, including the set up of pre-prepared medications.
6. Maintain clean and properly stocked treatment areas, examination rooms, and pharmacy.
7. Assist in maintaining a clean and disinfected surgery area.
8. Assist with preparing prescriptions as approved by the veterinarian.
9. Check in clients in the morning, assist veterinarian with patient evaluation.
10. Surgical preparation of all animals for spay/neuter surgery.
11. Assist with monitoring of anesthesia and post op recovery.
12. Cleaning and sterilization of instruments/packs, use of autoclave.
13. Assist in maintaining a clean and disinfected surgery area.
14. Restrain animals for veterinarian or RVT.
15. Assist with medical procedures as requested.
16. Thorough cleaning of cages, runs, surgery and treatment areas.
17. Acknowledge and greet all clients in a professional and timely fashion.
18. Properly and accurately prepare all client records in preparation for spay/neuter, examination, or other veterinary service.
19. Accurately prepare invoices for hospitalized animals in the clinic.
20. Handle all financial transactions and reconcile client files daily.
21. Answer telephone calls promptly and professionally. When appropriate, direct messages to the proper individual with necessary documents.
22. Schedule all exam or surgery appointments.
23. Make appointment reminder and follow-up calls.
24. Complete and file all client records daily.
25. As needed per facility, obtain the files for all appointments scheduled for the next day and make them available to the veterinarian for review.
26. Maintain a well organized, clean, and well stocked reception and office area.
27. Clean and maintain in proper order all hospital wards, examination rooms, vaccination station, and adjoining hallways.
28. Educate the clients on general animal care and welfare within the scope of EBSPCA training and as approved by the veterinarian.
29. Process all forms and other paperwork required for intake and discharge of hospitalized animals.
30. Prepare prescription requests and submit to the veterinarian for approval, as needed.
31. Enter client/patient data into the computer and perform other related computer functions, as needed.
32. Provide general office support such as typing, filing, sorting material, preparing forms.
33. Provide extra assistance to clients as needed.
34. Able to lift at least 35 lbs. alone and >35 lbs. with assistance, if necessary.
35. Perform other duties as assigned by the DVM or the Clinic Manager.
Qualifications:
1. HS diploma or equivalent
2. Experience working as a veterinary technician
3. Good with numbers and computer literate
4. Organized and reliable
5. Excellent communication skills and comfortable working with the public
